Recuperating

Tilda and I are both getting better, although Tilda definitely isn’t 100% yet. I forewarned everyone that she was a picky eater, but the tiny amount of food she’s eaten since we left Melbourne has surprised even me. She doesn’t have her regular appetite, and I think being sick makes food taste different, and everything here is a little bit different. This morning she had some buttered white toast, which seemed like a real accomplishment. And I suppose she’s eaten when she’s been presented with chips or fries.
Yesterday we spent the afternoon at Christie Pits, a big park within walking distance of Katherine’s house (although that description would be debated by Tilda, who had to be carried the last block home.) There’s a playground and a wading pool, as well as a regular pool which we had to go to once Tilda knew it was there – no waiting until tomorrow was allowed, so I walked back to get my bathing suit. The pool is free, which is great given that we didn’t get a whole lot out of our visit. There’s a deep pool with a slide and a diving board, but in order to use them kids need to have a wristband that says they’ve passed their “deep water test”, which consists of swimming 25 metres of front crawl while a lifeguard is watching – dog paddle doesn’t count. Tilda tried her best and got about halfway, and then said she was too cold and wanted to sit on the edge of the pool to warm up. So she’s not at peak fitness – hopefully when she’s feeling better (and has eaten something!) she might be able to do it. I can’t imagine too many 5 year-olds pass their deep water test.
Melissa gave Tilda a few toys when we saw her on Friday, including the Totally Me! Light-up Fashion Designer, a light box with interchangeable faces, hair, and outfits to trace. Tilda has had a lot of use out of it – we’re on the second set of batteries.
