Rabbits and fences

It’s Literacy and Numeracy Day at school today, an exciting day that takes its zingy title from National Literacy and Numeracy Week. To celebrate, everyone was asked to come to school dressed as their favourite author, mathematician (yeah, right), or book character. Tilda decided to go as Peter Rabbit. I think her teacher suggested Peter Rabbit as an option – I have a vague memory of reading a Beatrix Potter book or two from the library when Tilda was little, but I wouldn’t have described Peter Rabbit as her favourite book character by a long shot.
I love that Tilda took responsibility for designing her costume, and that I was in no way expected to construct something elaborate. I did suggest a cottontail pinned to her shirt, but she decided that it was too fussy. I also love that most of the other kids that I saw this morning were in equally unambitious outfits, although I did see a small boy in a large Spongebob box, with his face painted yellow.
And in boundary-shifting news, George was allowed in the leather chair today for the first time. It is not the first time he’s been in the leather chair, just the first time he was allowed. He follows the sun around – this morning I saw him leaning against a wall that was getting the sun – and if there’s a comfortable piece of furniture in the sunbeam, so much the better.
He’s less restrained about getting on the previously forbidden furniture ever since I took pity on him and allowed him up on the red couch for the occasional cuddle. This means that sometimes I come home and find that George has been rearranging the cushions.
