Apple falls off tree, does not roll away

Tilda has never shown a particularly strong interest in crafts, but she heard telephone reports this morning that Phoebe and Estella were sewing pillows and wanted to do the same. I looked to see how much polyfill we had, squished it up, and told her that there was enough for her to make an 8″ [...]

Snow

Last week we went to the beach, so this week we went to the snow. Thanks to Yvonne’s motivation, we drove up the Yarra Valley to Warburton and then Mt Donna Buang. Yvonne expected a winter wonderland around every corner, but it was still exciting when we found the first dirty remnants of snowplowed piles. [...]

I gave in …

… and got an iPhone. And some new apps. I may or may not have neglected the children and dogs in my care. But I definitely photographed them.

Rolling

Tilda’s birthday party was at a roller rink (although I’m pretty sure no one in Australia uses the word ‘rink’.) She was excited about having her party there because she’s spent the last few months improving her rollerblading skills.  And I looked forward to taking many photos like this: Of course, many of the poor [...]

8

Today was Tilda’s birthday, or “birthday day” to distinguish it from “birthday party” (which is tomorrow.)  She took in 3 bags of little Twix bars to hand out to her class, and came back with a few lovely handmade cards. It’s Friday, so there was school assembly.  This year they’ve tried to start the tradition [...]

Best day at the beach ever

Today, on the placid, shallow bay beaches of the Mornington Peninsula … … there were WAVES. (And friends.) Fortunately Tilda had in reserve a complete surfer vocabulary, featuring phrases such as “This is awesome!” and “Now that’s what I’m talking about!”

Tea towels

I had a hard time deciding what to get (make!) Sanjot for her birthday, until I remembered these tea towels. Sanjot has a thousand tea towels, which must mean that she likes tea towels, so definitely she needed 7 embroidered day-of-the-week tea towels. On Monday I went to IKEA to get the towels (linen, of [...]

Diving lessons

Another school holidays, another week filled with lessons at the pool.  Diving lessons this time, and Tilda has definitely made progress since she last took diving lessons a couple years ago. She’s grown quite a bit as well! Estella decided to take diving lessons too, so she kept Tilda company and managed some amazing dives [...]

Trains, trams, and a museum

Yesterday was our visitors’ last day in Melbourne, and they still hadn’t done anything specifically Melburnian. Particularly as there were boys involved, our outing had to involve trains and trams, which they don’t see much of in Canberra. We took the train into the City, heading for the Melbourne Museum. As soon as we were [...]

The new year

This was our fifth time going into the City for New Year’s Eve fireworks. Last year Tilda considered New Year’s Eve to be at least as good as Christmas, as she loved the trip into the City, adored going on the rides, and tolerated the excessively noisy fireworks. In past years there were crazy pedestrian [...]
